Orbiter Columbia glides through the atmosphere in preparation for first landing at Edwards Air Force Base. The landing site provided a large lakebed landing site. The heat resistant black tiles cover the bottom of the vehicle. Split elevons on the aft wing provide aerodynamic control for atmospheric flight. The 3 SSME nozzles are above the body flap and vertical tail with rudder speedbrake above. (credit NASA photo)
